Full day in Amman. Had breakfast and intros with Cliff [Kindy], Peggy [Gish], and Weldon [Nisly]. Good chats all around. Can’t remember the specifics, but despite rich histories all around, it seems that each person was more profoundly nostalgic about events in Rutbah.
The morning was spent figuring out visas at the Iraqi embassy. Then in the afternoon, all but Greg [Barrett] went to visit the MCC building. I shared with Peggy & Weldon parts of my history over hummus and chicken. My heartburn has been an ever-present problem. No coffee though, so I can’t blame that…
Over dinner, we did check-ins and Greg walked us through his idea for the book and insisted we not filter ourselves. We mostly reminisced, each of various aspects of the trip (and me of my learning about it through Shane [Claiborne] and Jonathan [Wilson-Hartgrove']. We also got into pacifism with Greg (Weldon got fired up about it). Learned that Peggy and Cliff talked down a suicide bomber and coaxed an Armor [Commander] into joining [Christian Peacemaker Teams].
After that, Greg left and the three of us did check-ins. I shared about my “pendulum” image from Hebron and my (now) metaphors of overlays, like I had in the Army.
Overlays
map = stark reality, facts. each successive overlay is another layer of meaning. each one adds to the overall picture of God’s work and purpose.
without overlays, there is no meaning, no greater mission or purpose.
