On the inside left cover of my Rutba journal is a ‘panic card’ with information on why we were there. The reverse sides were in Arabic so we could show them to local Iraqis and explain what we were doing there:
“We represent a group of American activists dedicated to hearing the voices of people most affected by the U.S. warfare in Iraq. We are traveling, briefly, in Iraq, to visit with doctors and nurses who have given some of us hospitality and medical treatment in the past. When we return to our homes, we will work on behalf of a just and lasting peace.”
On the right inside cover of my Rutba journal, I wrote some lyrics from “Surely We Can Change” by David Crowder.
